MEET THE TEAM
Ryan Johnstone on Working at John Lawrie Tubulars
Have you always worked in the metal industry?
No, I worked in the oil Industry before I joined John Lawrie Tubulars.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I’m responsible for overseeing our staff and day-to-day yard operations, ensuring everything runs safely and efficiently.
My role includes managing the saw cutting of tubulars, coordinating the maintenance schedule for our fleet of vehicles and machinery, and handling the discharge and loading of pipe vessels at Montrose Port. I also take care of ordering supplies and keep things well-stocked to support smooth operations across the board. It’s a hands-on role—and I enjoy the variety it brings every day.
What are the favourite parts of your job?
Every day brings a new challenge, offering the chance to learn, grow, and adapt to whatever comes our way. It’s that constant variety and problem-solving that keeps the work interesting and rewarding.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
One of the more challenging parts of the job is the people side—managing a team with different personalities and working styles. It takes good communication, a bit of patience, and knowing how to bring everyone together to get the job done.
What are you most proud of, do you have any achievements you’d like to highlight?
I feel proud that my efforts have been recognised, and I’ve been promoted to Operations Manager. It’s a reflection of the support around me and the value of working hard and being part of a strong team.
