MEET THE TEAM
Iain Bell on Working at John Lawrie Tubulars
Have you always worked in the metal industry?
No, I left school and started an apprenticeship to become a joiner. After doing that for around 10 years I decided to take on a new challenge and took a job with John Lawrie starting in the weigh bridge office. Since joining I have worked hard to progress within the organisation, holding roles in sales, logistics and more recently my role of general manager.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I help keep the wheels turning behind the scenes. My day revolves around making sure the right information gets to the right people—so everyone can do their job effectively and we stay running smoothly and efficiently. It’s all about keeping the team connected and the workflow on track.
What are the favourite parts of your job?
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is coordinating and executing vessel loading and unloading operations. It’s a critical part of our workflow that requires precision, timing, and clear communication—and it’s made even better by working with a skilled and reliable team.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
When things get busy—which they often do—keeping track of time can be a real challenge. There’s always something happening, and the fast pace means you have to stay sharp, stay organised, and constantly prioritise to keep everything running smoothly.
What are you most proud of, do you have any achievements you’d like to highlight?
Being asked to take on the role of General Manager is something I’m genuinely proud of. It was a real moment of recognition, and I’m grateful for the trust and support from the team. It’s a role I’ve grown into with a lot of help along the way.
What advice do you have for those who aspire to work in the industry?
This is a fantastic industry with real opportunities for growth and development. My advice would be to approach each day with a willingness to learn and a proactive attitude—those qualities can take you far.

Any pets?
We’re currently in the exciting process of becoming foster carers for a guide dog. We’ll provide a temporary, loving home for a dog in training to become a guide dog, playing a crucial part in the dog’s journey, helping them develop the skills and temperament needed to assist someone with sight loss. We’re really looking forward to supporting such an important cause and helping make a difference in someone’s life.
