Supplying the Geothermal Drilling Sector
John Lawrie Tubulars are well known as one of the largest steel tubular stockholders in the UK with over 25,000 tonnes of stock at any one time. Our large inventory of repurposed casing pipe ensures that we are perfectly positioned to supply steel pipe and drill rods (Manufactured in-house) into the geothermal industry.

Geothermal Drilling Products
We now regularly supply Large Bore drill rods like BR50 / 2 3/8” IF to the geothermal drilling sector in locations around the UK and Europe. These rods are manufactured in-house and are Made in Britain accredited. Our experienced team of machinists manufacture standard and custom-made tool joints in-house, these are friction welded to the tubulars (up to 152.4mm dia), the ends are heat treated and Nitrided for added strength and wear resistance. The rods can be supplied plain or painted as per customer requirements.
Large bore drill rods are not the only products we supply to the geothermal drilling market, our steel tubulars can be supplied for casing geothermal wells. Our tubular products can be supplied for both single developments and large-scale commercial projects which often can require 1000m or more of pipe. Our repurposed steel tubulars are high grade tensile steel and our bespoke LCA highlights that they save 97.12% C02 emissions (over using new prime steel), which means that our products are not only cheaper but also greener and more sustainable than buying new. Drilling Geothermal Boreholes
The depth of a geothermal borehole depends on the site, the available space and the square footage that the system needs to heat/cool, and the type of ground source heat loop. For example, we typically supply pipe for vertical GHSP boreholes which go deep and take up less horizontal space. They are usually between 100-200m deep (around 330-650ft).
We don’t provide an installation service, but we work with industry expertise who do, this enables us to be in the position to recommend top-quality geothermal drilling organisations who use the best equipment and suppliers.
